The War Angels may not be going to playoffs, but don't tell them that. With nothing to lose the War Angels travelled 14 hours to the Division Champions Portland Fighting Fillies, and came inches shy of giving Portland their first division loss. Lakeya Sears got the first TD for the War Angels after she returned a punt for a Touchdown. The War Angels Defense then took control and made multiple stops to hold Portland to only 8 points, a season low for the Champs. When the 4th quarter ended, the War Angels were tied 8 to 8. Portland got the ball first on overtime. They scored a touchdown and made a 2 point conversion. Not to be outdone, the War Angels scored a touchdown on their first drive. On the 2 point conversion, Chantell Wiggins, War Angel QB, rolled out to score but was stopped inches short. The War Angels rookie season may have ended with defeat, but the future is as bright as ever. Throughout the season, these rookies fought with some of the best teams in the country. They came up inches short of beating the Pacific North Champions (Portland Fighting Fillies) and seconds short of beating the Pacific South Champions (Pacific Warriors). The War Angels have made their mark, and with one season of experience under their belt, they will be a force to reckon with in the future.

The Central Cal War Angels will have their final home game this Saturday June 5, at San Joaquin Memorial Stadium against the Los Angeles Pacific Warriors. The Warriors come into the game with a 5-1 record. The last meeting between the two teams came down the last play of the game when the Warriors scored on 4th and goal with 4 seconds left in the game, to take the win 35-29. The War Angels have been waiting over a month for their revenge and with 4 more games under their belt since the last meeting against the Warriors, they are no longer willing to use inexperience as an excuse. The War Angels are just two wins away from making the playoffs, an unprecedented feat for a rookie team. They have shocked the WFA with their talent and are 3rd in the Nation with 156 pass yard per game. Leading the aerial assault is quarterback Chantell Wiggins (#8), who is 4th in the Nation with 740 passing yards this season. Her main target is Lakeya Sears (#24) who has 22 catches and 380 receiving yards, placing her 3rd in the nation among receivers. Samantha Hearnes (#85), who has only recently been placed at the receiver spot has 6 catches for 180 yard. The Warriors are led by Cassey Brick (#24) who has rushed for over 600 yards this season and averages over 10 yards a carry and Lisa King (#9) who has racked up over 448 receiving yards on the
season.

Valley Football Reunion
The game will also match up coaches who have been Central Valley football heroes. Two coaches who will be pitted against each other are Tre Nevel, Head Coach of the War Angels and Jeff King, Fresno City Wall of Fame Linebacker and Offensive Coordinator of the Pacific Warriors. Both Coach King and Coach Nevel are also current coaches of the back- to-back CVFLchampions (21-0) Cen Cal Crusaders (men's semi-pro). And if that wasn’t enough of a Valley Reunion, the LA Pacific Warriors are coached by Sean Finnerty, 3 year starter at Fresno State ('01-'04) and Offensive Lineman for the Central Valley Coyotes ('09).

War Angels battle veteran Warriors

The War Angels were 5 seconds short of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the league. Playing against a veteran team with twice the size, the War Angels took it to the Pacific Warriors and came seconds away from taking the victory. The War Angels were down 20-8 at halftime and they stepped up their defense and stopped the Warriors from scoring on the next 2 drives. In the third quarter, Crystal Phillips scored her second touchdown of the game to make the game 20-16. Another stop by the War Angel defense put the War Angels in position to score and Crystal Phillips scored her third touchdown to give the War Angels the lead. 23 to 20. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors came back and threw for a touchdown pass with 8 minutes to go in the game taking the lead 27-23. The War Angels battled back but were almost stopped on the Warrior 40 yard line, looking at 4th and 15. With 2:30 to go in the game, Chantell Wiggins threw a 40 yard touchdown pass to Samantha Hearnes to give the War Angels the lead 29-27. Unfortunately they left too much time on the clock and the Warriors drove down the field to the 5 yard line. With 5 seconds to go in the game and 4th down and goal, the Warriors QB, Sarah Mc Vicar found Cassie Brick on an slant pass and she went in for the winning score. Final score: Central Cal War Angels 29 Pacific Warrior 35.

War Angels Put the Hurt on the Sting!

As hundreds of fans packed Memorial Stadium, the War Angel players prepared for their first ever football game. The question on everyone's mind. "Can women play football?" The opening drive started slow. Three and out. The San Diego Sting struck early with a long rushing touchdown making the score 6-0. That was the first five minutes.

The next 55 minutes belonged to the War Angels. Led by Quarterback Chantell Wiggins, wide receivers Lakeya Sears and Lisa Castodio, and runningbacks Melisa Marker and Crystal Phillips the War Angels electrified the crowd. Wiggins threw for two touchdown passes, one to Castodio and the second to Sears. Phillips and Marker racked up rushing yards. Phillips broke tackle after tackle rumbling into the endzone for two touchdowns and pointing to the crowd as if to say "Did you doubt us?"
The War Angel defense also bounced back. Led by Sis Burns, Melissa Chavez, Toni Sanoval, and the Hearnes sisters, Sam and Jen, the War Angels were slamming Sting players to the ground and knocking off helmets during bone crushing tackles.
As the final whistle blew the War Angels celebrated their first ever game as a victory. Final score War Angels 26 - San Diego Sting 18. "I've never imagined they would be this good," remarked one surprised fan, "It was great football. I was really impressed."
The War Angels take on the Portland Fighting Fillies next Saturday 4/17 at Memorial Stadium.
